Gynecomastia is referred to as male breasts, since this abnormality occurs only in males. This condition can start in
adolescence and may persist or can develop later in a man due to steroid abuse, weight gain, hormonal imbalance, or a side
effect of certain medications. Gynecomastia may cause stress as well as embarrassment, causing patients to seek treatment.
Male breasts can be reduced with the help of liposuction as well as surgical removal of the underlying breast tissue if necessary.
Most of the time this can be performed through limited incisions that leave inconspicuous scars.
The procedure is done under general or intravenous sedation anesthesia, and takes approximately one and a half to two hours.
Infrequently, drains are placed at the time of surgery, and should be removed a few days. Dr. Kole suggests patients wear an
elastic compression vest for several weeks under the clothes to aid in the skin re-draping process. Patients can resume most
activities within two weeks, and should be able to perform chest exercises and heavy lifting by four to six weeks. It is important
to avoid steroid use if this was a causative factor. Most men feel so self confident after surgery that they often remove their
shirt in public for the first time after surgery.
