Kybella: Non-Surgical Treatment for Double Chins

Millions of men and women in the country live with one of the most embarrassing effects of aging — the dreaded double chin. Those days appear numbered, however, since on Wednesday, April 29, 2015, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration approved Kythera Biopharmaceuticals Inc.’s injectable drug to treat adult submental fat, the first non-surgical option to banish the double chin. The product will be known as Kybella.

The Science Behind Kybella

Kybella injections contain deoxycholic acid, a substance that is found in the human intestines. The acid works as part of the digestive process by breaking down fat cells for absorption and elimination in the body. Kybella works the same way for reducing the fatty deposits that cause double chins.

Does Kybella Really Work?

Over 2,500 people participated in a clinical study conducted by Kythera Biopharmaceuticals, and the results are amazing! Most of the participants reported a satisfactory reduction in the size of their double chins, with 87% reporting a significant improvement. Additionally, 96% reported overall improvements in their neck and chin areas. The statistics support the cosmetic benefits of Kybella for patients with moderate to severe excess fat associated with double chins.

Benefits of Kybella Treatment

Kybella is a promising development in the field of plastic surgery. Previously, the only treatments for patients with double chins were neck lift surgery and liposuction. The greatest advantage of Kybella is that, like dermal fillers, the product is injected into the fatty areas, so it is a minimally-invasive procedure. The treatment takes approximately five minutes compared to the hours you may spend in surgery. Additionally, healing only takes a matter of days versus the weeks or months associated with neck lifts and liposuction. The non-surgical treatment also helps patients avoid complications associated with surgery, and swelling, tenderness and bruising around the injection sites are the most common side effects, which generally last only one to three days.

What Happens During Kybella Treatments?

Based on studies conducted for Kybella, optimum fat reduction occurs with multiple treatments, generally six sessions for a total of 50 injections. As with all injectable treatments, Dr. Kole tailors the treatment to each patient’s individual needs and cosmetic goals.
