Tummy Tucks in the Philadelphia and Bucks County area

When people talk about Plastic Surgery, they seem to know a little about everything.  However it’s best not to obtain your medical information from fashion magazines and TV celebrities.

Let’s start this discussion with some basic questions.

Is a tummy tuck performed for weight loss or for body contouring?

Answer: For body contouring.

When patients come in for a consultation with the ideas that a tummy tuck is done for weight loss, it should be understood that after a tummy tuck, you will be lighter but the main goals of a tummy tuck is to tighten the weak underlying abdominal muscles and the removal of extra skin. Plastic surgery should never be used for weight loss. Plastic surgery is about improving one’s confidence and self-esteem and about creating or restoring body contours.

What are the top reasons for having a tummy tuck?

Answer: post pregnancy and weight fluctuations.

After pregnancy and weight loss, the underling abdominal muscles become weaker and stretched out. This leaves your abdominal core muscles weak which gives a person a “bowed” side view rather than a flat abdominal contour.  Once those muscles are weakened, no amount of working out or abdominal exercises will make them get closer together only stronger and thicker in their stretched out position.

Can you know if someone needs a tummy tuck just by looking at them?

Answer: Absolutely with the right training.

Evaluation of a patient’s abdomen encompasses several factors. Evaluation of the underlying musculature laxity, the skin excess and quality (stretch marks). If there is good upper abdominal skin above the belly button and significant laxity below the belly button, the entire section of the lower abdomen from the belly button down will be removed and the abdominal wall muscles tightened (a full tummy tuck) and stretched to make the abdomen tight again.

Liposuction is frequently done in combination to enhance contours by removing extra bulges of fat and to remove “love handles”.
