What Is a Facelift?

A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures. It involves the smoothing and tightening of the patient’s face and neck and generally relies on removing excess skin in some cases. Most patients who seek out such a procedure are over 40 years old and want to look and feel younger. Anyone who is undergoing a facelift should have realistic expectations to restore your face to a more youthful appearance. It will, however, not stop the natural aging process. You should be a non-smoker if you are interested in getting a facelift.

How Is a Facelift Performed?

A facelift is performed under general anesthesia so the patient will have minimal discomfort during and after the procedure. The three popular types of facelifts are the traditional, short-scar, and mid-lift facelifts. The traditional facelift is the most invasive and relies on incisions made in the hairline to the base of the ear and around the tragus at the front of the ear. These incisions are made in such a way that there is minimal scarring afterward. The muscles and fat are manipulated, tightened, and repositioned, resulting in a younger-looking appearance. Sometimes, there will be the addition of facial implants in areas such as the cheeks and chin to add volume. Short-scar facelifts, also known as the “mini lift,” involve tightening the facial muscles and removing jowls. This is an ideal procedure for patients who have only experienced the early signs of aging. The mid-facelift focuses specifically on portions of the face, specifically cheeks and eyelids.
