Breast Augmentation in the Philadelphia area

Breast augmentation or breast enhancement is one of the most frequently performed plastic surgery procedures in the Philadelphia area as well as the United States.  There are many different personal reasons women desire breast augmentation.

Some women simply never developed large enough breasts for their frame to make them proportional and would like to have larger breasts. Sometimes after childbirth, weight loss and increasing age, the breast tissue shrinks and women want their former breast size and shape to be restored. In these situations, the breasts may have begun to sag.  A breast lift which tightens the breast tissue and removes extra skin in conjunction with breast augmentation may be the best way to both lift the breasts and increase breast size.

All of these are good reasons to consider breast implant surgery.

What Happens During Breast Augmentation surgery?

When considering breast augmentation, there are several choices that need to be discussed. First is the type of implant. Women now have a choice between saline filled breast implants and gel filled breast implants. Kole Plastic Surgery is a very experienced board certified plastic surgeon breast specialist and uses both types of breast implants on a regular basis.

Saline or Silicone implants?

Saline implants are adjustable at the time of surgical placement, so if your breasts are asymmetric with different volumes, these implants can be adjusted to make your breasts more symmetric.

Gel breast implants tend to feel more natural and softer than saline breast implants do and silicone gel breast implants and do not ripple like saline breast implants can sometimes do. Both types of breast implants come in round or countoured shapes. The contoured shaped implants allow more control of the “shelf” of the upper portion of the breast for a more natural look.

There are different types of incisions as well:

Inframammary incisions are the most popular. These incisions are the smallest in length and are placed in the breast fold where the incisions will be well hidden.

Peri-areolar incisions are placed around the areola (the brown part around the nipple). This heals well but carries with it the risk of nipple numbness and has a scar visible on the breast.

Axillary incisions are in the armpit where any residual scarring will be well hidden except when you raise your arms overhead.

Above or below the muscle?

Implants can be placed on top of the chest muscle (subglandular) or under the chest muscle (submuscular or subpectoral). Submuscular breast augmentation placement of the breast implants usually gives you a more natural look.
