What’s the difference between breast augmentation and breast implants?
Breast Augmentation is the medical term for the surgical procedure of enhancing your breasts with either silicone-filled or saline-filled breast implants. Breast implants are the physical devices that are placed into your body to make your breasts larger.
Is Breast Enlargement with Breast Implants Right for You?
“I wish my breasts were bigger.”
“After having a baby, my breasts have lost all their shape.”
“I would be happy with my figure if only I had fuller breasts.”
Perhaps you have only said these things in your head; perhaps you have talked about it with your girlfriends or husband.
No matter whom you talk to about your dissatisfaction with your body, you have every right to learn more about ways to improve your figure. If your primary concern is the size of your breasts, breast enhancement & breast implants may be right for you.
Which Breast Implants Are Best for You?
Breast enhancement, or breast augmentation, is accomplished by inserting implants either above or under the muscle to enhance the breasts. The implants increase the visible and physical volume of your breast tissue and have given millions of women the figure they want.
The types of breast implants currently available are saline and silicone. A saline implant is a deflated silicone shell that is inserted under the breast and then inflated with a sterile saline solution. A silicone implant is prefilled from the factory. It consists of a silicone shell that is filled with silicone gel material.
The incision size for silicone-gel implants is slightly larger than saline implants because saline implants can be rolled up and inserted through a small incision, usually less than one inch long. Silicone implants come prefilled and can only be inserted pre-filled, so the incision size for silicone implants is slightly larger than for saline implants.
What are gummy bear breast implants?
A gummy bear implant is a generic term for the new cohesive silicone gel implants. These implants are made out of non-leaking silicone gel with the consistency of Jell-O rather than the older liquid silicone-filled implants that have the consistency of honey.
What are the safest type of breast implants?
There are two types of breast implants, saline-filled and silicone-filled. They are both safe and FDA-approved. Saline implants are filled with saline or saltwater and silicone implants are filled with a silicone gel. Silicone implants were removed from the market in 1992 and they were placed back into general use in 2006. The formulation of breast implants has also changed. Liquid silicone is no longer used in breast implants while the new “Gummy Bear“ implants or highly cohesive gel are now in common use.
Should the Breast Implant Be Above or Below the Muscle in the Chest?
No matter the type of implant, there are two positions where an implant can be placed: under or on top of the chest muscle. Each of these choices has distinct benefits.
Implants placed above the muscle are positioned directly underneath the breast tissue and are, therefore, more easily felt.
Implants placed below the muscle have a better physical feel, being more pleasing to the touch.
It is Dr. Kole’s opinion, as an experienced Southampton, PA, Bucks County, PA plastic surgeon, that implants placed under the muscle last longer and have a lower complication rate. He prefers to put all implants below the muscle when possible.
Size matters to you. We understand that completely. Whether you want a smaller, more natural appearance or a larger, more curvaceous profile, we can help you achieve the look you want.
During your private, initial consultation, Dr. Kole will help you decide the best course of action, the best size for your frame and the size and placement that will give you the look you want.
How long do breast implants last?
Breast implants are not to be considered lifetime devices. They will eventually need to be changed due to rupture. When a saline implant ruptures, the saltwater gets absorbed by your body and eventually urinated away while the empty shell remains in your breast. When a silicone implant ruptures, it does not lose any volume so it’s more difficult to tell as compared to a saline implant. Breast implants can last for many years and do not need to be replaced unless they fail but the deflation rate is about 7% deflation after 10 years’ time.
What is the recovery time for breast implants?
The recovery after breast implants has two basic categories of recovery- pain recovery and social recovery. The pain recovery after breast implants is also based on two factors: the amount of muscle stretch and the amount of skin stretch. If you choose to add very large implants, the skin stretch and the muscle stretch will be significant and you will experience more discomfort than if you are using smaller implants. If the skin is already a little stretched after you’ve had children, then the pain recovery after breast implants is less. The social recovery includes how long it takes for you to look great without clothes on. Breast implants are usually placed under the muscle and therefore the muscle tends to go into spasm after surgery and the implants sit higher on your chest for several weeks until the muscle relaxes. So therefore, you look great in clothes but not great naked until the chest wall muscle relaxes, and the implants settle into place.
