Otoplasty: A Bucks County, PA Plastic Surgeon’s Guide to Ear Pin Back Surgery
Ear surgery in Bucks County PA—the medical term is otoplasty—can improve the position or shape of the ear. Otoplasty is appropriate to address a birth defect in the ear’s structure or to repair damage to the external ear due to injury or trauma.
The most common form of ear surgery that Dr. Kole performs is a “setback” otoplasty. This Bucks County PA procedure is done to set back or reduce the appearance of a prominent ear, whether it is from the abnormally-shaped cartilage or from an overgrowth of the cartilage. Otoplasty is usually performed around age five to six; however, many adults can have these procedures performed as long as the patient is in good medical health.
Ear growth is nearly complete by age five, so this typically is the earliest that this type of surgery is performed. At this age, the ear cartilage is very pliable and easily shaped. An additional reason to choose otoplasty at a younger age is that it can minimize teasing and name-calling by a child’s friends and classmates, which can seriously damage a child’s self-esteem and confidence.

Surgical Techniques for Otoplasty
The surgery for otoplasty in Bucks County PA is straightforward and based purely on anatomy. The specific procedure depends on the anatomic reason for the ear protrusion or prominence. In simple cases where the ear is missing a fold, Dr. Kole can recreate this fold using cartilage-weakening techniques, as well as suturing techniques. The scar from this surgery is placed in the crease in the back of the ear so it will not be visible from the front or the side.
In more difficult cases the cartilage is larger or thicker than normal. In these cases, Dr. Kole removes a section of the larger cartilage as well as using cartilage-weakening and cartilage suture techniques to return the ear to normal proportions in relation to both the side of the head as well as the protrusion outward from the head.
Otoplasty for adults is only slightly more difficult than for children. Adult cartilage is not as pliable as that of children, but Dr. Kole regularly achieves successful results with adult ear surgery. An adult considering otoplasty should be in general good health with no illnesses that inhibit healing.
Recovery from Ear Surgery
This cosmetic procedure is performed in our surgical center as an outpatient using light intravenous sedation and local anesthesia. In younger patients or patients who are very anxious, general anesthesia can also be used.
The recovery is usually quick and straightforward. The patient will be placed in a head wrap after surgery to protect the ears from trauma, and Dr. Kole will see the patient the next postoperative day. Protective wraps are worn for several weeks while sleeping to protect the ear from trauma. For several months following surgery, patients must avoid contact sports—such as wrestling—and sports that include helmets, to avoid accidentally pulling the ears forward and damaging the sutures and healing process.
What to Expect from Your Otoplasty
The results from otoplasty can be seen immediately after surgery. The patient feels more confident which is often accompanied by wearing short hair in men or an uplifted hairdo in women.
Otoplasty can dramatically alter your self-esteem, even when the change in your appearance is subtle. You may find yourself to be more confident and at ease in social situations. For that reason alone, otoplasty is one of the most gratifying forms of facial cosmetic surgery we perform at the Kole Plastic Surgery Center Center.
