Do man boobs grow back after surgery for gynecomastia?

“Man boobs” or gynecomastia surgery is the surgical removal of extra unwanted breast tissue. This extra growth of breast tissue usually occurs for unknown causes in most men but many preventable causes are well documented.

Men who develop soft fleshy breast tissue have a medical condition called gynecomastia. The condition, is not responsible for any health dangers or concerns. Their “man boobs” tend to develop during adolescence but may occur during adulthood as well. The appearance of man boobs bother men and motivate some to seek out surgical correction. Originally it was thought to be that the majority of gynecomastia cases were caused by a genetic predisposition for excess breast glandular tissue to accumulate in the chest or a hormonal imbalance. Both remain to be true, although, additional reasons can contribute to the growth of male breasts, during adolescence and adulthood.

  • Excessive weight gain
  • Use of anabolic steroids
  • Certain prescription medications
  • Marijuana use and abuse
  • Variety of recreational drug use
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Variety of herbal supplements
  • Different medical diseases
  • Pituitary gland tumors
  • Feminizing testicular tumors

In general the results of “Man Boob” or gynecomastia surgery are permanent. This is because the offending breast tissue and fat is removed giving you a flat masculine appearing chest. It is highly unlikely that the male breasts will grow back after surgery, unless, the same abovementioned reasons were the origin of your condition and caused a regeneration of breast tissue. Most men that have been medically diagnosed with gynecomastia, don’t have the excessive breast tissue condition due to drugs, medications or diseases but have extra breast tissue due to unknown reasons called idiopathic gynecomastia.

Sometimes, even with special liposuction cannulas, there is a small residual area of breast tissue behind the nipple and areola. Some patients want an absolute flat chest appearance. This may require an additional surgical procedure to excise all breast tissue which is usually not removed completely removed with liposuction alone. This tissue is then excised through a small incision at the edge of the areola. Surgery can be completed in by using different liposuction techniques, yet the idea is have the masculine natural look of his male chest without an operated look. Whatever technique is used during surgery, in order to acquire masculine looking breasts, the perfect amount of breast tissue and excess fat is taken from behind the nipple and chest wall. This varies with every patient. There isn’t one simple standard or measurement.

Surgical results for your man boobs are almost always long lasting without their return. Most men are very satisfied with the outcome. It is always best to maintain a healthy lifestyle, with regular exercise and proper nutritional habits, for optimal success with your new chest appearance. If male breast enlargement is due to marijuana use, other recreational drug use, weight fluctuation or steroid use, there is a high possibility you will have some kind of a limited recurrence, but you will never get back to your original size before surgery.
