What Is a Breast Lift?
Over time, women can experience sagging and stretching in their breasts. This is usually due to becoming pregnant and subsequent breastfeeding, weight loss, aging or gravity induced changes of the breasts.
In most cases, women approve of the size of their breasts, but don’t particularly like the shape of them. A breast lift, or mastopexy, removes extra breast and restores a more youthful appearing breast shape and contour. A breast lift also reduces the areola size and repositions the nipple in the center of the breast in the most projecting position. If you have also lost breast volume over the years, a breast augmentation with either saline or silicone implants will result in a dramatic improvement in breast firmness and breast volume.
How Is a Breast Lift Performed?
A breast lift is usually performed with an anchor-shaped incision. An incision around the areola, from the areola down to the breast fold and in the breast fold itself constitutes the anchor. The nipple and areola are moved upward to balance the breast shape and reposition the nipple and areola complex.
Women who plan to have additional children in the future should postpone the breast lift procedure until after they are done having children, so the skin will not additionally stretch after they deliver.
What Can I Expect during Recovery from a Breast Lift?
For several days after the mastopexy procedure, you will be wearing a soft surgical bra and your breasts will be swollen and feel heavier. This subsides quickly and patients usually don’t have much pain. The sutures are removed after one week and most sutures are internal and dissolvable and do not require removal. Most patients return to work one or two weeks after the surgery.
