Facts and Information about Blepharoplasty in Suburban Philadelphia

Blepharoplasty is also referred to as eyelid surgery.  The purpose of this procedure is to remove excess skin, muscle and fat.  Eyelid surgery can fix sagging upper lids, which then provides the face, with a refreshed look.  From that a younger and rejuvenated appearance occurs naturally, as the face looks naturally rested.  Lower lids have more extra skin and bulging fixed.  In combination, it is truly a win-win situation.

Eyelid surgery cannot remove all the crow’s feet wrinkles that are around the eyes, lift droopiness of eyebrows and remove  all of the dark circles under your eyes.  When the tightening of the under eye skin is addressed surgically, a lot of wrinkles do go away.  Some of the finer ones may still be there.  Under eye dark circles can improve somewhat if they are there due to big bags, yet, usually under eye skin that appears darker prior to surgery will usually remain the same. As all the skin is not removed.   If a perspective patient is concerned about their upper eyelids and eyebrows, during a complimentary consultation, the extra skin of the top eyelids are assessed and the eyebrows are measured to see if they have dropped over time with aging.  When eyebrows are still in their proper spots on the face and in proportion, it is the top eyelid that extra skin is needed to be worked on.  If the eyebrow has dropped low, the forehead will be raised, by hand, to a spot where it looks appropriate for the face.  If the upper eyelid skin looks good when doing that, it usually seems best that a brow lift would be more beneficial than working on the eyelid.

Many people opt for Blepharoplasty before a full or mini facelift years before because when the skin around the eyes begin to droop, bloat, puff and remain that way, it is much easier to fix than wait for what often is seven or ten years for all over facial wrinkles and sagging to occur.  This surgery is one that women and men may both have with excellent results achieving a younger look with an easier feeling of their eyelid skin after the removal and tightening.  There is not a minimal age as to when a patient may have this procedure.  Often there is a hereditary pre-disposition involved.  A large amount of female patients tend to be between 45-55 yrs. old, although, that is the average.

Usually scarring isn’t visible after healing.  Incisions are intentionally made in the lids, creases and folds.   If you tend to scar easily, then you might have some light, inconspicuous scars, only to be seen when you close your lids.  That would also be when you have nothing on your lids to conceal them.  Sunblock is very important on the delicate eyelid area.  Sunblock use will keep all pigmentation as even as possible.  It will take about three to four months to see your final results from surgery, possibly sooner or a bit longer, as each person heals at their own rate.  The initial swelling and bruising should be gone two weeks after surgery.  After two weeks after surgery you may:

  • Start wearing contact lenses again
  • May return to work
  • May begin to wear make-up again
  • Return to normal routine, including non-rigorous exercising
  • Continue to watch the amount of bending and lifting
