Above or Below the muscle?
Placement of your breast implants has to do with three main factors:
Feel of the breast
Contour of the breast
Complication rates
There are only two options for breast implant placement.
- Above the muscle
- Below the muscle
Most plastic surgeons recommend that you place your implants below the muscle to lower complication rates, have a better post operative shape and better feeling augmented breast.
Breast feel
Implants placed on top of the chest wall muscle are immediately under the breast tissue. This makes the post operative augmented breast feel more “fake”. Implants placed under the muscle layer to shield the implant and thus the implant is deeper from the skin and thus feels better to the touch.
Contour of the breasts
Implants placed below the muscle have the muscle to camouflage the implant contours. This leads to a more “mature” breast contour and shape. Implants placed above the muscle show more because there is less natural tissue coverage over the implant.
Complication rate
Placing the implant above the muscle leads to a greater complication rate, (displacement, asymmetry, leakage, rupture, palpability, wrinkling or rippling) than placing implants below the muscle.
To help minimize complications, get an augmented breast that both feels and looks natural, choose to place your breast implants below the muscle.
