Who is a good candidate for male blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) ?

Blepharoplasty, or an eye lift, is a cosmetic procedure that lifts sagging skin from the upper and lower eyelids.  Blepharoplasty can be performed on the lower or upper eyelid, and can also correct under-eye bags.  The procedure is performed by excising excess skin and lifting the remaining skin to make the eyes appear more open and awake.  Blepharoplasty is often performed on individuals who have experienced sagging eyelids and fatty bags under their eyes as signs of aging.  Blepharoplasty can make patients’ entire faces look younger, less tired and refreshed.  Additionally, blepharoplasty is a subtle procedure that can be combined with more involved surgeries like facelifts and brow lifts.

Male blepharoplasty is a quickly-growing option for men who are experiencing sagging in their upper and lower eye lids.  Recently, many men have elected to get a blepharoplasty to improve their sagging eyes and improve bags under the eyes and possible vision impairments.  While male blepharoplasty can be beneficial for most men who want to improve signs of aging around the eyes, there are certain characteristics that dictate ideal candidates for the procedure.

Ideal candidates for male blepharoplasty

The ideal candidate for male blepharoplasty is a man who is dissatisfied with sagging skin on the upper and/or lower eyelids and excessive fatty bags under the eyes.  Often times, saggy upper lids create an appearance of looking tired or disinterested, and sagging lower lids contribute to men looking older and frail.  Candidates for male blepharoplasty might notice that their eyelashes are hidden by sagging skin or that their vision is impaired by dropping upper lids.

Men with vision impairment that is caused by upper eyelid sagging are especially good candidates for male blepharoplasty.  In addition to the aesthetic benefits, blepharoplasty can drastically improve vision which can improve quality of life and function for many men.  If your vision is impaired and you are considering a blepharoplasty, contact Dr. Kole who will contact your insurance company to discuss whether the procedure can be covered.  There are specific requirements for each insurance company that need to be met in order for the procedure to be covered, but if it is proved that you have vision impairment, you may get approved from your insurance company towards a procedure that would otherwise be considered cosmetic.

Ideal candidates for male blepharoplasty are those that are knowledgeable of the procedure and have realistic expectations about what eye lift surgery can and cannot do for them.  Male eye lift surgery will correct sagging upper and lower lids and will reduce bags under eyes.  The procedure will not, however, correct fine lines and wrinkles or crows feet near the corners of the eyes.  Good blepharoplasty candidates are aware of their own goals for the procedure and have discussed with their surgeon whether their desired results can be achieved with a blepharoplasty.

Poor Candidates for blepharoplasty

It is important that men who are interested in getting an eye lift are in good health.  General good health is key to being a successful surgical candidate for any procedure, and eye lift surgery requires certain health standards.  If you are suffering from a detached retina, dry eye syndrome, glaucoma, or problems with tear production, you may not be a candidate for blepharoplasty.  Additionally, it is important to discuss with your internist and Plastic Surgeon if you have diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hyperthyroidism, or hypertension, as it may complicate surgery.  If you are a chronic smoker, you must discuss with your Dr. Kole before undergoing a cosmetic procedure.

Male blepharoplasty is usually performed on men who are over the age of 35.  The average age of men electing eye lift surgery is closer to 50 years old, but some younger men do have early signs of aging.  For men closer to the age of 35, they may want to correct sagging eyelids because their eyes make them appear older than they are and do not match the aging of the rest of their face or body.
