4 Things to Consider Before Getting Kybella in the Philadelphia area

double chin plastic surgery procedure

Kybella is a drug administered to significantly reduce the amount of neck fat a person has. With an FDA seal of approval and the fact that it produces visible results that lasts for years, it is easy to see why everyone is ready to give this product a try. However, before you get any treatments done, here are 4 things you should consider before getting the Kybella treatment.

1. Giving Full Disclosure

For your own benefit, always give full disclosure of any pre-existing medical conditions and any medications you might be taking before you get this procedure done. The active ingredient in Kybella is a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid, a compound naturally found in the body.

While this ingredient stimulates faster breakdown and absorption of fat, there is no knowing how Kybella might react to or aggravate your medical condition. If you have a pre-existing medical condition, like certain autoimmune diseases, you may not be eligible to get Kybella injections done.

Medication such as vitamins, over the counter prescriptions, anti-coagulants, or anti-platelet medications and herbal supplements may also have an adverse affect on the results and the after care of the treatment.

2. There are Side Effects

While Kybella treatments are non-invasive, they do have side effects on the people getting them done. These can range from common side effects such as:

  • Temporary Swelling and Numbness
  • Redness
  • Pain
  • Bruising

More severe side effects include:

  • Trouble in swallowing
  • Small, hard areas arising where the drug was administered
  • Accidental injury of the marginal mandibular nerve, located near the jaw
  • Weakening of facial muscles, causing limited ability to show facial expressions.

Seek medical attention immediately if you experience any severe side effects after getting the Kybella treatment done.

3. Administration and Eligibility Criteria

While Kybella has received FDA approval, there are certain rules for administration and an eligibility criterion to follow as well. Patients must be above 18 years old to get this treatment done.

For safe and effective results, the Kybella treatment can only be given in a maximum dose of 10mg/mL in one session. This is administered through a maximum of 50 injections, each containing a dosage of 0.2mL. A person can get a total of 6 single session treatments as long as they are administered at intervals of one month or more.

Kybella can only be injected into the chin area if there are no prior neck and chin infections or injuries and no prior cosmetic procedures done in that area. Injecting the drug in other areas is neither approved nor recommended as the possible effects have not been studied so far.

4. Go To a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon

While Kybella is a little costly, don’t cut corners and look for cheap alternatives. Always go to a licensed and Board Certified plastic surgeon that not only knows how to conduct the procedure properly but will also ensure it is done in a manner which minimizes any adverse effects you might have. Doctors just can go out and purchase Kybella and use it on patients, they must also take an in depth training course on its use prior to using it on any patients.

Moreover, when you’re working with a good plastic surgeon, you can expect transparency and an exchange of information which can help you make the right decision.
