What Is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck is a procedure that flattens the abdomen by removing extra fat and skin. It is ideal for people with extra skin from major weight loss or pregnancy and for those who have stubborn belly fat that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise. A tummy tuck also tightens abdominal muscles which may have weakened and separated during weight gain. This helps your stomach stay firm following the procedure.
How Is It Performed?
There are two types of abdominoplasty: full and mini. The full procedure involves a long incision from one hip bone to another, with another incision around the belly button. The skin along the abdominal wall is loosened and muscle tissues along the wall are stitched together in layers and tightened. Extra fat is then removed by liposuction or by hand. The belly button is repositioned and the skin pulled down over the incision line. Any extra skin is removed, leaving you with a nice, flat tummy.
A mini tuck uses a much smaller incision. It’s best for those with localized fat deposits. Once the fat is removed, the skin is pulled over the incision and excess skin is removed as in the full procedure.
