Common Questions Answered about Male Liposuction

Kole Plastic Surgery at The Kole Plastic Surgery Center compiled a list of common questions asked during consultations for male liposuction.  For more questions, please call us at 215-315-7655 to schedule a  private complimentary consultation with Kole Plastic Surgery.

Are there differences between male and female liposuction?

Procedurally, liposuction is the same for both men and women.  However, men tend to request subtle changes that are not too drastic but that make them look a few years younger and a few pounds lighter.  Women, on the other hand, tend to want to be sculpted to a greater extent and the natural curves of a woman’s body often lend themselves to creating more drastic improvements.  For men, liposuction is a great option for ridding themselves of accumulated fat deposits around the abdominal area, as it is a particularly problematic area for men.  Additionally, men who exercise and eat healthily but still cannot get sculpt areas of the body like the upper arms or thighs are great candidates for liposuction.

Can I have other procedures done at the same time?

Yes, liposuction is a procedure that can easily accompany other procedures.  In fact, liposuction is more often used as an adjunctive treatment to more invasive procedures like abdominoplasty or male breast reductions.  Liposuction removes excess fat that might not have been excised during an abdominoplasty or male breast reduction, and will contour the treated area to make a more precise and natural appearance.  Of course, speak with Dr. Kole  about what other procedures you might be interested in along with your liposuction to determine whether it is a feasible goal.

Can liposuction treat cellulite?

In general, liposuction does not affect cellulite.  While the procedure removes fat from under the skin, cellulite will remain.  It could improve cellulite slightly by smoothing out the skin, or could potentially worsen it because of the changing volume of fat under the skin.  There are treatments specially designed to fight cellulite, and Dr. Kole is willing to discuss those options with you if you want to be rid of cellulite in addition to your liposuction procedure.

Is liposuction permanent?

Many people ask us this question, and the answer is not a simple “yes” or “no”.  Yes the procedure is permanent, meaning it permanently removes fat from the body.  Further, fat tends not to re-accumulate in areas that have been treated with liposuction.  However, it is possible to gain weight after liposuction which may partially undo the results of the procedure.  For individuals who have had liposuction and then gain weight, they can experience a bumpy, uneven accumulation of fat as a result of treated areas not collecting fat while nearby areas do.  For this reason, it is always suggested that men (and women) who are considering liposuction be at a stable weight before the procedure, and attempt to remain at that weight or continue to lose weight after surgery.  Remember, liposuction is NOT a weight loss procedure, it is a sculpting technique and the main goal is to look more sculpted, not to be utilized as a weight loss tool.

Does liposuction hurt?

Patients tend to feel mild discomfort after liposuction surgery, but for the most part the procedure is pain-free.  Liposuction is performed through tiny incisions in the treated area that heal quickly after surgery, preventing long-term discomfort that might accompany a long scar.  After surgery, it is common to experience bruising and swelling, which is a result of the manual manipulation done to loosen, separate, and discard the excess fat.  Within a week or two the swelling and bruising will subside and should no longer cause pain or discomfort.

What are the risks of liposuction?

Liposuction has a high success rate and rarely results in complications.  However, it is always important to weigh the benefits and risks of any surgical procedure.  Risks of liposuction include bruising, swelling, and bleeding from incisions.  In a small number of patients, allergic reactions occur because of anesthesia or infection occurs after surgery.  Patients risk a loss of sensation in the treated area, although it is almost always temporary and sensation soon returns to the skin.  With specialized types of liposuction, like laser assisted liposuction, patients are at risk for burns associated with the laser.  Additionally, liposuction might result in skin that is puckered, discolored, or wrinkled around the treated area.  While these are risks of liposuction surgery, fortunately the procedure is generally safe and complications are quite uncommon.
