Look your best on video chat with the “Facetime” Face lift

“Facetime” Face lift

Back in the days when people communicated by mail and phone, you could speak with someone in your pajamas with no makeup and the person on the other line wasn’t any the wiser. Today, though, with new technologies like the iPhone’s Facetime and Skype, nearly all conversations can be face to face! This creates a new need for people to look their best on camera and video, and the field of cosmetic surgery is fulfilling that need by tailoring facelift procedures to smooth out and firm up facial features that are most problematic on camera. This newly developed procedure has become known as the “Facetime face lift”.

Dr. Robert Sigal, a plastic surgeon in the Washington DC area, developed this new adaptation to the facelift in response to hearing complaints from patients about their appearance on video. “People say, ‘I never knew I looked like that! I need to do something!’” relayed Sigal in explaining why he developed this procedure. Since then, board certified plastic surgeons have begun to adapt their facelift procedures to address the specific complaints that the use of video communication has created.

Many consumers of video communication applications have noticed that the light and angle of video chatting systems are unflattering and highlight imperfections. Many users look down into their video devices, maximizing certain facial features like neck lines and wrinkles on the lower portion of the face. Some of the most common complaints about appearances on video chat are sagging necks, wrinkles around the lips, hallowed cheeks, and sunken jowls. Additionally, scars from traditional facelifts are noticeable over video chat, so surgeons adapted a procedure that eliminated scars visible over video.

At The Kole Plastic Surgery Center, Kole Plastic Surgery meets with each patient in an extensive consultation to understand what results they hope to see from a facelift procedure. Dr. Kole regularly performs three types of facelifts that address various complaints such as jowls, wrinkles, and hollowed features of the lower portions of the face. The different approaches range in visible scarring and effect on certain facial features, making the procedure flexible to address a wide variety of concerns—even complaints about appearance on video!
