Other Uses for Botox®

Botox® is one of the most commonly known anti-aging treatments worldwide. This product has exploded, in the last decade, as the most frequently used treatment for non-surgical skin care solutions. The reason for its immense popularity is due to the simplicity and effectiveness of Botox®. However, this revolutionary product was not originally intended for incredible wrinkle treatment and has a myriad of other medical uses, to which you were probably unaware.

The off-label use of Botox® to treat facial wrinkles has helped turn this toxin into a bestseller. Here are some of the most intriguing, and less recognized, uses for Botox:

  1. Chronic Migraines – Botox® is an FDA-approved treatment for reducing migraines. Botox is injected around the muscles of the scalp and neck that are involved in headaches. Botox enters the nerve endings and blocks the release of chemicals involved in muscle contraction.
  2. Excessive Sweating – Botox® is an FDA-approved treatment for reducing excessive sweating and perspiration in the underarms, hands, and feet.
  3. Overactive Bladder – Botox® is injected into the bladder muscle, where it helps block the nerve signals that trigger overactive bladder.
  4. Severe neck spasms – Botox® is an approved drug for use in treating a disorder called cervical dystonia, which is characterized by abnormal head position and severe neck pain.
  5. Crossed-eyes – Botox® is FDA approved to treat crossed-eyes. This was one of the first approved treatments for the Botox® product. Botox® can be used to treat a disorder that affects about 4% of Americans: strabismus, where the eyes do not line up in the same direction.
  6. Premature ejaculation – Botox® is not yet FDA approved for this treatment, but Allergan is currently testing Botox® for this issue. It is believed that injecting the product into the penis might relax the muscle and delay ejaculation.
  7. Cleft lip scars in babies – Botox® is not yet FDA approved for this treatment, but testing is underway. Some doctors have found success with this after injecting the infants’ scars with Botox® in order to hold the muscles still which will allow the scars to heal. This can greatly improve the appearance of the scars. It’s a relatively new and innovative use for this incredibly versatile product.
