Am I Too Old For A Male Tummy Tuck ?

Upper aged male patients think about having a tummy tuck but often wonder if they are too old for the procedure.  Ask Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Kole Plastic Surgery if there is an upper age limit for a male tummy tuck and he will ask you to define your terms for ‘too old’.  Some men might be 72 years chronologically, though, more like 55 years old physiologically.  This is due to working out regularly, living a healthy lifestyle and having great genes.  There is absolutely a chronological age and a physiological age and for some men that gap is quite wide.  With the assumption you are in overall good health, have reasonable expectations and are not trying to look inappropriate for your age, Dr. Kole is usually in favor of undergoing this enhancement procedure, but, will always be honest and need a thorough medical history for all patients.

In the United States, the average male life expectancy is now at 79 which makes cosmetic body enhancement procedures an added incentive for seniors to look as good as they can for as long as possible.  Men that were once assumed as ‘too old’ for work to be done or laughed at when it was mentioned to family and friends are no longer experiencing such, as they are having tummy tucks and other cosmetic procedures on a regular basis.  Remember that patients of all ages must meet specific requirements to be a good candidate considered for plastic surgery.  The male tummy tuck is an invasive procedure performed under general anesthesia.  Men in upper chronological age groups cannot have any uncontrolled chronic conditions, such as, but not limited to the following:

  • High blood pressure
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Pulmonary diseases or conditions
  • Diabetes
  • Men should not smoke

When a man in his upper 50’s—70 years, with good skin elasticity, consults for a tummy tuck, Dr. Kole likes to know his motivations.  If a patient wishes to look the best possible, for his age, that indicates an emotionally healthy attitude.  A conservative approach is used when performing this body enhancement for upper aged men, as their abdominal area must look proportioned and in synch with his body above and below, after healing and recovery or results will appear very unnatural, unflattering and strange.  Some older men do quite well with a mini-tummy tuck, as well, to keep the body balanced and in harmony.

Dr. Kole favors the subtle approach, especially for seniors.  He openly shares that when patients have a male tummy tuck, results of the surgery should look like a gentle enhancement and not scream out to others. Male tummy tuck patients come to discuss their candidacy and clearly express not wanting to look as though they are in their 30’s—40’s and would like to look slightly younger than their bodies appear.  Many men want to look as good as they feel and there is no reason they should not or cannot.
