Submental liposuction is a surgical procedure where the fatty tissue under the chin and along the upper and middle portion of the neck, is carefully suctioned away using mini and micro-cannulas and a sculpting technique using liposuction. Dr. Kole performs this neck liposuction procedure with very fine cannulas through a small incision hidden in the crease under the chin. Dr. Kole uses special instrumentation designed especially for neck liposuction to leave the overlying skin virtually non-traumatized by the neck liposuction procedure and to limit the incision size to less than ¼ inch.
This submental liposuction procedure is ideal for patients with an aging neck who request a cosmetic benefit without the surgical scarring and recovery time for a traditional neck lift operation, or for younger patients with a stubborn diet and exercise resistant area of fat under the chin. The liposuction results are most impressive when patients have good elasticity of the neck skin, allowing for a good retraction of the skin and a tight contour after liposuction.
The micro cannula submental liposuction procedure is usually performed in an office-based setting using local anesthesia or if combined with other cosmetic procedures, it may be performed in our licensed outpatient Ambulatory Surgical Center. The procedure takes about 30 to 45 minutes including the time for the anesthesia to take effect.
Effective contouring of the neck and chin area can be achieved if a patient is a good candidate for the procedure. A good submental neck liposuction candidate is someone who has good elastic properties of the neck skin. Patients with hanging skin, large bands of skin and muscle and poor elasticity should not have liposuction but an excision of the hanging skin and tightening of the muscle called a neck lift.
