Male Breast Reduction in the Philadelphia Area

Gynecomastia, the medical term for large male breasts, is a more common problem than you think. There is an automatic assumption about men with excess breast tissue. It is usually believed to be that their “man boobs” are caused by a weight problem. This is usually embarrassing for many men and carries a stigma that is still attached to this condition. Research estimates that up to 60% of the male population have a degree of Gynecomastia. There is a remedy for this condition. A surgical procedure called male breast reduction will eliminate the problem if you or a loved one wish to no longer have large embarrassing male breasts.

Some known reasons to cause enlarged males breasts:

  • Hereditary predisposition
  • Use of marijuana
  • Use of medications with estrogen
  • Use of antidepressants
  • Unknown or otherwise called Idiopathic
  • Use of Anabolic Steroids
  • Cancer
  • Impaired Liver Function

Weight gain and loss can add to the exaggerated look of sagging skin and breast tissue, yet, it is not a reason for tissue build-up of the larger male breast.

Male Breast Reduction Remedies and Surgery

Dr. Edward Kole prefers his male breast reduction patients looking for cosmetic improvement to be in good health and close to their ideal body weight as possible and generally maintaining a healthy lifestyle of diet and exercise, feeling prepared for their body change that cosmetic surgery will provide and have the tissue firmness, along with the skin elasticity needed to contour their adjusted pectoral area. During your initial consultation, Dr. Kole will discuss and evaluate your skin and muscle quality, as well as, answer all of your questions and concerns.

Male breast reduction surgery is usually performed with one of two different surgical methods. Primary excision is used when excess glandular tissue is present with little extra fat.

With excess fatty deposits being the main cause of your problem, the preferred method is liposuction. If you have both excess fat and tissue, then a combination of liposuction and tissue excision is performed. No matter which surgical approach is used, the procedure usually take approximately two hours, under general anesthesia or IV sedation, at our fully licensed ambulatory surgical center. Our main concern is always your safety and comfort.

Recovery from Gynecomastia Surgery

After surgery a compression vest will be worn for two to four weeks. This will help with any bruising and swelling and is very well hidden under your clothing. As with almost all patients who undergo elective, invasive surgery, you will experience a varying degree of bruising, swelling, pain and slight burning. Rest is needed and withholding from heavy lifting, exercise and straining is necessary for two weeks. It is important to avoid direct sunlight to the breast area and the scar tissue to decrease the possibility of hyperpigmentation of the scar. You will have scarring around your areola, which will fade, blending and becoming barely visible, usually between 9-12 months after surgery. A continued healthy lifestyle after your male breast reduction surgery will have your “man boobs” a part of your past.
