The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has, after nearly seven years of exhaustive clinical trials, finally approved the highly cohesive “gummy bear” teardrop shaped gel breast implants for all of his breast augmentation patients. This implant is more stable than the older type of silicone implant especially in the upper pole of the breast.
Highly cohesive gel implants or “gummy bear” breast implants have been used in European countries for over-20 years. Recently approved by the FDA in the United States after a six year investigation, the Allergan style 410 implant is now available for use by qualified and certified Plastic surgeons. Not just any plastic surgeon can use these implants, your surgeon must prove his competency prior to being allowed to purchase these implants from the manufacturer.
The main advantage of this type of implant is in the actual silicone material itself. The highly cohesive silicone material does not leak and has less effect from gravity in the upright position. In the older type of silicone implants that were approved in 1997, when the patient stands up, the silicone settles with gravity and there is less fullness in the upper portion of the breast.
This highly cohesive material allows for the implant to retain a more natural shape when placed into the breast, and is preferred for augmentation patients who are looking for a natural profile and less round shape to their breasts.
If this implant sound too good to be true, it has some disadvantages. Since the implant is more stable than traditional silicone implants, it requires a slightly larger incision for surgical implantation. This incision is usually hidden under breast fold.
