Saline Breast Implant Complications in Bucks County

Saline breast implants are supposed to be the healthiest breast implant choice. Saline implants use a smaller incision than silicone implants to insert them into your body as they get inserted empty then filled once inside your body. This means the incision is smaller but saline implants are not completely devoid of complications. Patients need to be aware of breast augmentation complications before they get a breast augmentation.

Saline Breast Implants and Complications

The main reason that saline breast implants are thought to the healthier decision of breast implant choices is that they are filled with saline (salt water). Unlike silicone filled breast implants, if saline implants leak, the saline water filler is reabsorbed into the body and eliminated in your urine.

Hard breast scar

Capsular contracture or hardening of the naturally occurring normally soft scar tissue is more common with silicone implants. Sometimes this scar contracts or gets hard and changes the feel and shape of the implants. Not infrequently, scar tissue can grow into the implant valve thereby holding it open and leading to a slow leak. If your saline breast implants do rupture or leak, you need to see your implanting surgeon or Dr. Kole right away. This is so that the scar doesn’t contract around the deflated implant leading to a significantly more complicated re-implantation surgery.

Fold failure

Another reason leading to saline breast implant leaking and failure is called fold failure, This occurs in the same fashion as an aluminum can being bent back and forth weakening the metal leading to failure. In saline implants, the folds also occur and can lead to failure of the implant and leakage.

Infection

Infection in breast implants is a rare occurrence. If an infection is noted within a few days to about two weeks after the surgery, then the infection was introduced at the time of surgery. If an infection is noted months to years later, then the infection was most likely introduced from an infection elsewhere in your body that traveled through the bloodstream and settle into the breast implants and they then became infected. In either scenario, the implants will most likely need to be removed and the infection treated with antibiotics.

Extrusion

If the implants are too large for the person’s body and/or the skin cover over the implants is too thin, the blood supply to the skin can be compromised. When this happens, the skin can break down due to the pressure exerted on the skin by the implant leading to an opening in the skin. This opening leads to exposure to the air and an impending infection.
