Types of Chemical Peels

The use of chemical peels has been popularly made for a number of years by men and women alike to enhance their skin’s appearance. The procedure is simple, as a chemical solution is applied to your skin, after which, your outer layer of the skin will congeal from the acid, the old skin then peels off and is replaced with the new skin that is fresher and has a less wrinkles. There are however, different types of chemical peels being used today; three of the most common ones are highlighted below.

Chemical Peels of Light Depth

These chemical peels can come in a variety of names. Typically, they are made up of light chemicals which are chosen taking the patient’s skin into consideration. Other names of this peel are AHA Chemical peels, Glycolic acids, salicylic acid chemical peels etc. A light chemical peel only works on the outmost layers of the skin, ensuring that it peels off to be replaced by newer, smoother skin.

Another thing that light chemical peels are used for is stimulation of collagen and elastin production in your skin. People who have minor issues with their skin are best suited to opt for light chemical peels.

Chemical Peels of Medium Depth

These chemical peels have been used for the past twenty five years. Typically made up of trichloroacetic acid (TCA), they are considered effective in peeling off a number of different changes to the pigments, photo-aging signs and sun spots etc. As a common practice, patients start to feel a change in their skin’s tone to a more even and smoother feel as early as post the first treatment.

Yet the results aren’t fast reaping and you may have to wait three to four weeks after the treatment to get the maximum advantage. However, with this Skin Resurfacing the improvements to the skin continue long after the treatment.

Some of the treatments that a medium depth acid peel can provide are highlighted below:

  • Increases the skin’s smoothness
  • Evens the tone of the skin
  • Increases the skin’s radiance
  • Lessens the appearance of acne scars
  • Softens sun caused skin lines

Chemical peels of Deep Depth

The deepest type of chemical peels is known as phenol peels. Unlike other peels, they address some of the more serious imperfections of the skin such as:

  • Acne Scars
  • Blotchiness
  • Coarse Wrinkles

Unlike the milder chemical peels mentioned above, the recovery period and the treatment period are both lengthy and mildly uncomfortable. As a result of which, people opting for this kind of a chemical peel, are screened carefully. For example, patients with heart conditions, freckles and those that have a dark skin are better off without a deep chemical peel.
