Why NOW is the perfect time for your male breast reduction (gynecomastia)

With all the snowy weather lately, it is hard to imagine that in just a few short months people will be returning to the beach.  Even though it is nearly freezing outside, in a few more months people will be trading in their winter boots for bikinis and shorts.  While the winter months might be the time you look forward to most because you can bundle up and hide any features you aren’t happy with, it is inevitable that summer will roll around again and with the warm weather comes the dread of having to uncover and show the world your body.

If you are a man suffering from gynecomastia, the abnormal growth of breast tissue, summer months can be nearly unbearable.  Understandably, it is embarrassing and uncomfortable to wear more revealing clothing—or no shirt at all—when you are dissatisfied with your enlarged male breasts.  Gynecomastia is a medical condition, caused by a variety of things including certain medications, hormone imbalance, or weight gain, which causes the production of fatty tissue in the male breast.  A typical male breast is flat with the nipple flush to the surface of the skin, but men with gynecomastia may have breasts that look more like female breasts with pendulous tissue and protruding skin and nipples that are positioned lower than the average male breast.    For many men, gynecomastia prevents them from enjoying activities like swimming or going to the beach and contributes to stress and low self-esteem related to their body image.

Male breast reduction surgery is a solution to gynecomastia that is effective and long-lasting.  Dr. Edward Kole, a plastic surgeon specializing in male surgery and breast surgery, notes how male breast reduction can eliminate the symptoms of gynecomastia and can return the male breast to a shape and form that is more typical of the average man.  By removing the excess tissue and fat through liposuction and selective tissue excision, Dr. Kole can restore the breast to being flat against the chest muscle.

If there was a significant weight loss, either due to diet and exercise or surgical means, the techniques such as skin excision and nipple repositioning can eliminate any sagging skin and will ensure that the patient leaves with breasts that look like a typical male breast.  While it is in the dead of winter, Dr. Kole suggests that now is the perfect time to consider male breast reduction so that patients have plenty of time to heal and recover before making their beach debut.

Dr Kole and the Staff at The Kole Plastic Surgery Center Center has compiled this list of reasons why now is the perfect time for your male breast reduction surgery.

  • It takes time to commit to a surgery:  You may be ready this minute to go forward with a male breast reduction, but it takes time to plan for a surgery, so it is in your best interest to plan ahead.  The first step in planning your surgery is scheduling a consultation with Dr. Kole.  During that meeting, you can ask the doctor questions you have, and you will be examined to determine the most appropriate course of action during your surgery.  Other things to plan for are transportation to and from surgery, some assistance for care for the days following surgery, any time taken off work that may be needed, and extra help with certain things that will require lifting or stretching after your surgery.  By starting the process now, you will ensure that by the summer months you will be back to normal functioning.
  • Recovery takes time:  Nothing heals better than time, and healing after your male breast reduction is no exception.  As with any surgical procedure, there will be small incisions created from the liposuction and skin and tissue excision that need to heal properly.  Dr. Kole will provide you with compression garments and the nurses will teach you how to care for your wound, but patients need to be patient and accept that healing will take some time.  By electing breast reduction surgery now, you can give your body plenty of time to heal prior to being seen shirtless again.  Scars tend to fade within a few months of surgery and you will be able to resume exercise so when you do hit the beach, you will be revealing the best “new you” possible.
  • Winter wardrobe hides surgery well:  The best part about getting surgery in the winter is that any scars, bandages, and garments can be hidden by baggy winter clothing.  This gives you time to heal in private, and allows you the flexibility to reveal your new body at a time you feel is best.  For many men, the goal of surgery is to improve the area that they are dissatisfied with, but to obtain subtle results that will not be recognized by others as surgery.  By getting a male breast reduction over the winter, it gives men the time to get used to any body changes themselves, and will also give others the impression of a more subtle change.
